Jonas Cornelsen, recreation assistant

Inspired by a trip to Montreal, recreation assistant Jonas Cornelsen transformed unused cafe space into a resource that promotes vibrancy and social interaction. He created a resident-focused social hub three days a week called Covenant Cafe. He transformed the space by using existing supplies and getting funds from the resident and family council to upgrade the space. Residents know they can find good coffee and conversation there.

Jonas listens to resident and family ideas and does his best to bring their suggestions to life and address concerns. He has created a space in the cafe where residents can see and pick up donated hygiene and stationery items giving them more autonomy and dignity.

He developed partnerships in the community to enhance Covenant Cafe. Through one of these partnerships, a local music shop donated a guitar that hangs in the cafe and is available for sing-a-longs.

Jonas introduced recycling and composting initiatives in the cafe that go beyond what is typical onsite. By unplugging some of the old commercial kitchen equipment, he is reducing energy. Jonas is using the vacant fridges for secure storage. He puts lights and seasonal decorations in the large display case.

Covenant Cafe has increased interest on site tours and with new move-ins. Families often bring their loved ones to the cafe to visit.
