Unit 7Y

Unit 7Y team

Staff on unit 7Y at the Edmonton General Continuing Care Centre work to maintain a home-like environment. They invite family members to participate with care. Routines are adjusted if a resident needs a little extra attention or care.

The team is sensitive to new residents moving onto the unit. They recognize people may need a little time to adjust to a new place. Staff give the new resident a little extra attention to make them feel special and introduce them to other residents in the unit with similar interests and backgrounds.

Staff develop close relationships with residents, especially those who have no family. They will sit with a dying resident, holding their hand so they will not die alone. When a resident passes away, they communicate with family members and offer words of kindness and reassurance.

This year one of the unit’s longtime residents passed away. The impact of losing this resident on staff and other residents was significant. Staff held a candlelight prayer memorial with the family and some residents. Everyone was able to share their condolences with the family and share some funny, heartwarming stories which provided some closure.

There are many residents on the unit who are dependent on the team to care for all their needs. Some residents have difficult or challenging personalities. Staff treat all residents with extreme patience and kindness.
